Books, the right books, teach students about those “soft skills” as they used to be called… I like to call them life skills. Read alouds are my favorite way to introduce and teach social emotional learning skills and social skills. And there are so many out there!! You can also find so many SEL skills woven through “regular” read alouds– you know the ones you read for reading instruction □ Hit 2 birds with 1 stones as they say… Recently– especially this year– we have had a big focus on read alouds for emotional regulation. There is just so much you can do with a good read aloud.Įach SEL/Social Skills group starts with a good book. Read alouds for emotional regulation are without a doubt my go-to for SEL lessons and social skills small groups. I also have an extreme love and passion for emotional regulation and self-regulation (and the books that go with them). And I desperately want to instill that love of books in my students.
